Damnation is Inevitable - Fragda (Review)

2022 has just begun and we have already got the heaviest release of January! While the term "blackened deathcore" is often being associated with Fragda, you quickly realize that these Hungarian boys have created a unique signature sound combining some of the heaviest genres existing in metal today. Their newest album "Damnation is Inevitable" is the living proof of it.

Opening the album with the instrumental "The Happening", this djenty track creates the doomy ambient atmosphere that would carry on throughout the album. "Five Pointed Symmetry" begins in a style of Blackened Deathcore and seamlessly transitions into djent with riffs and chugs, aiding to it is the Black Metal styled vocals on top. Chaos and Dissonance existing in the heart of "Wendigo", this song features a lot of techy-flashy tapping sections. "Thalassophobia '' begins itself with an ambient lead intro and a nasty bass added to it on top. With disjointed riff structure and a lot of weird noises on guitar, this song encapsulates the fear of a Thalassophobic person from water. "Black Sun '' aggressively kicks hard in the face with punchy drums and blasting guitars. The name perfectly suits the song, generating a sense of darkness. "Earthquake" shows an approach towards Tech-Death. Also a clean section and a hint of melody is present in the track, where dissonance rules the album. "Cult" and "Surface of Abyss' ' paints a picture of an alienated post-apocalyptic world through its soundscape. Beginning with a lengthy vocal sample, "Burning Legion" shows brutality at its best, closing the album where it eventually began.

The sound is often a mixture of djent style pioneered by Vildhjarta and Humanity's Last Breath and the black metal style of Anaal Narkath. To that, add Blackened Deathcore and Technical Metal riffs and a lot of ambience and space-techy-weird noises (probably an overuse of Killswitch). The heaviness of the drums is unfathomable in the mix, it just slams you right in the face. Bass has a very nasty, dirty and thick tone filling in the void.

As the name of the album suggests, "Damnation is Inevitable" is all about the negative vehemence you can imagine in the mind. A sense of Doom, Darkness, Death is all I can feel at the end of the record!
