Death Revival - Abyssus (Review)

Abyssus has been in the death metal game for a long time now. With their new release “Death Revival”, they have emerged again as the new hot topic of metal, and for all the good reasons!

The opening track “Metal of Death” might sound a bit cliched, but it begins with absolute ferociousness, combining the speed and style of Possessed and Slayer. The vocals remind you of the old school vocal style and texture of Obituary a lot. “Ten Commandments” and “Uncertain Future” continues with the ferocious energy of thrash, death and groove metal, with many memorable catchy riffs here and there. Influence of old-school album like “Scream Bloody Gore” is prominent in the track. A bit medium paced “The Beast Within” features Death styled songwriting. Even the vocals remind you of Chuck’s screams in a few places! Through the middle-eastern influenced melodious intro of “Genocide”, we lead in the second half of the album. Ask the boys of Abyssus how to make an old-school headbanger and they will show you “The Witch”. With such powerful riffs, it is just hard to resist yourself! The album closure, “When Wolves are Out to hunt” begins itself with an epic intro in the style pioneered by Death. With a bit of a doomy vibe, this slow paced track slowly builds it up to the speed. For me, this track is the most different composition of the whole album.

The boys of Abyssus know where their roots lie, and they are not afraid to showcase their tribute to the OGs. This album transports you from the modern era to somewhere in between late 80s to early 90s - the era which the album depicts. Konstantinos Analytis with his powerful vocals, Panos Gkourmpaliotis and Chris Liakos on guitars, Konstantinos Ragiadakos on bass and Jan Westermann on drums, this band is no less than a power-machine. With an album run-time of 32 minutes, they show you how to deliver old-school in modern time also, and how to deliver it with class.
