The Gaian Mind - Animårum (Review)

We've just stepped into the second week of January and we got so many heavyweight releases already! Amidst all this, Animårum quietly dropped their debut album, and guess what, we're here to talk about it!

"The Gaian Mind" paints a canvas of aesthetic soundscape mixed along with Death Metal madness. Like its predecessor bands like Obscura and Beyond Creation which have covered themes like "Soul" and "Spirituality",, Animårum borrows concepts about "The Gaia Philosophy '' and "Gaianism", evident from the album name itself. The three tracks: "Unknown Perception", "The Missing Link" and "Ambrosia" features some absolutely bone-crushing Tech-Death riff with dissonant phrases, to switching over to a Progressive, sometimes Djent-y soundscape. Guitar solos borrows neo-classical/baroque influences, with the playing style of Christian Munzner. Guitar riffs by Kevin Chiliquinga and Leart Begolli are often a blend of Obscura and Persefone. I could even draw parallels to riffs from the albums "A Valediction" and "Aathma". Drums by Christian Fajardo and Bass by Eddie Adamkowski lends to the much needed heaviness of the album. Often in the later half of the songs, drums take over the progressive riff, creating the atmosphere of transcendence - journey into some form of higher realm. Tracks: "Icaro" and "Cura" features Jessica Ortiz on vocals, which perfectly blends in with the atmospheric-mythical vibes of the tracks and acts as the opening and closure of the album.

With a run-time of 30 mins, the album has provided enough gateways to transport mortals to a place of higher consciousness. It is a perfect blend of technicality + progressiveness + ambience. Being somewhat intellectual and mature in songwriting, Animårum proves what it takes to be the torch-bearer of Persefone, Cynic and Obscura.
