INFRASTRVCTVRE - INFRASTRVCTVRE (Review)

Let's make Canada the official tech-death capital now! With bands like Neuraxis, Augury, Archspire and First Fragment already leaving behind a long-lasting impression, here comes a relative newcomer from Alberta, Canada. Infrastrvctvre is a technical death metal band with an experienced lineup of diverse musical background and influences. The band dropped their self-titled debut EP “Infrastvctvre” back in February. Though initially passing under my radar, I can’t wait to finally talk about the record.

The opening track “CELESTIAL AWAKENING” opens up a powerful wall of sound with its sludgy intro, before bleeding into the fast, catchy technical phrasings with a bit of dissonance mixed in it. With fast the vocal throws almost in the fashion of Stevie Boiser (Inferi), the passages seamlessly shift from highs to insane lows. Not to forget the clean section midway through the track followed by the melodic guitar solo, which is definitely the biggest takeaway here. “ALGORITHMENTALITY” might seem a new word, associated with computer stuff and Artificial Intelligence, but honestly the word aptly fits with the band’s music here. Starting off with a nasty bassline, the song wastes no time in establishing its fast-technical ground, along with the intense guitar layers of shreds and choppy riffs. Midway through the song, the track slows itself down to let the melody flow through the veins of the song. The elements of atmosphere vibe along with clean chanting vocals does act as oxymoron (musically speaking!) to the context of the hyper-complexity of the band’s music.

“ALTERED AND IMMORTALIZED '' begins itself with a meticulously designed slow, sludgy intro with piano melody below it, before opening up the doors for catchy riffs with intense drums. The main riff sounds suspiciously similar to “Septuagint” by Obscura (That's not the case anyway, but I just can’t unhear it anymore at this point). The vocals of Trevor Spice sync up so perfectly with each beat, making it sound much cooler. The band isn’t afraid to showcase their musical chops either with the incorporation of some prog and jazz elements in “TERRAFORM THE EARTH”. The outro track “THE HYPERPROPHETIC” showcases a serene clean outro with tasty basslines accompanying it, followed by the unpredictable song structure with choppy riffs in a start-stop progression. Again tapping into hyper speed with the technical riffing, fast vocal throws and intense double bass on drums, the band doesn't disappoint, even to the last moment.

With the diverse musical arrangement and complex songwriting, the band’s musical approach can be compared to modern tech-death bands like
Inferi, Symbolik and Singularity. The riffs of Max Mandler are a blend of speed with catchiness, while Trevor Spice channelizes the energy to keep up with the swiftness. The record does not even disappoint from the production standpoint, even being just their debut release. Thus, what can be said is that - Infrastrvctvre just needs more listeners at this point to reach their craft to the people and break into the metal scene. “Infrastrvctvre” is a memorable record in every way possible, and will hold a prestigious position in the band’s discography. All we can do is, wait for what the band has to provide us next!
