Desolation - Semprus (Review)

My day began with some OG deathcore of Thy Art and Oceano when I thought to check for some new deathcore releases. Well that's where I discovered Deathcore boys from England Semprus, who just put out their debut EP "Desolation" and I'm definitely here to talk about it!

The opening track "Desolation" begins in a classic Deathcore style and quickly bleeds into the sheer heaviness with its catchy riff and blasting drums, accompanied by some guitar leads here and there. Add some fancy deathcore breakdown at the end, and you got the perfect outro. "Genocide" being a mid-paced song, showcases some Technical riffs on guitar. The highs on the track certainly reminded me of Mitch Lucker. With a catch opener "The Sacrifice" is filled with dissonant riffs that bleeds into a breakdown, featuring some unique grooves to it that will force anyone to headbang! This is the only track to feature a guitar solo, which is quite chaotic and dissonant based on its phrasings. "Born of Sins" begins with a clean intro slowly flowing into the sheer heaviness, featuring some symphonic and orchestration elements on top. The breakdowns features fast-machine gun blasts on drums, with a bit hardcore influences at some places. The clean guitar returns later-half to close the track in a blackened deathcore fashion.

"Desolation" features a very conventional deathcore songwriting - a riff followed by a breakdown followed by riffs and ending on a breakdown. The lows on the vocals are deep and wide, oftentimes reminding me of CJ McMohan and Tom Barber while the highs remind me of Mitch. The sound of guitar and drums are reminiscent of the "Holy War" album by TAIM. The boys definitely know where their roots lie, and are not afraid to flaunt it. Each song, almost 4 min, wastes no time to show pure brutality. The boys with "Desolation" not only show their innovation but also give a payoff to their OGs.
