Godless Truth - Godless Truth (Review)

It pains my heart to see Godless Truth has survived almost two decades of death metal, yet they don’t get the necessary popularity or recognition it should deserve! I came across Godless Truth through their 2010 EP “Too Late To Stop My Hate” - three tracks that instantly caught my attention. All I wanted was more from this band. Finally the boys from Czechia are back with their newest self-titled album “Godless Truth”, and I am here to talk about it.

The album intro “Wheels of Entity” uses reverse piano melody, bleeding into the opening track “The Decision”. With punchy riffs and groovy drums, it sets up the atmosphere for the album right in the beginning. Along the halfway features a stellar melodic guitar solo by Rafael Trujillo himself (Obsidious, Ex-Obscura). Later-half features catchy riffs aided by a bit thrash-groove drums, perfectly setting up the first song for the album.

“Glory To Desperation” begins with an acoustic intro with guitar melodies on top, similar to “Heritage/Forsaken” by Obscura, which directly flows into “Scissors” - carrying forward the melody from the preceding track, this track again showcases some plethora of catchiness. Halfway contains dissonance based chords with pinched harmonics, making the section interesting. With such tight playing, the intensity and the dynamics keep on getting increased till the last moment.

With its interesting riff sections and blasting double bass, “Breathing Fire” with its dynamic changes and polyrhythmic approach is another catchy song. “Fortune Time” showcases rapid choppy rhythm sections with an atmospheric vibe in the chorus. Beginning with a drum filler intro “Bred In Greed” uses groovy riffs to catch the listener’s attention. The biggest takeaway however are the solos with melodic sweeps and shreds!

“The Eyechain” being a bit mid-paced, puts groove at its driving force. Also, the guitar solo by Joe Haley from Psycroptic levels up the game. “RIP Cage” bombs  with its blast beats and tremolo riffs before flowing into a slower paced chorus - giving an old-school vibe. The piano melody by Peter Gabor over the heavy chugs of rhythm provides a stark musical contrast. Also, ending the song with piano provides an unique kind of outro for “RIP Cage”. The last track “Wake Up To Obey” has a sludgy opening before flowing again again into the plethora of catchy riffs and groovy rhythm sections! The stellar sweeps with the complex song-structures reminds me of the “Planetary Duality” era of The Faceless

Godless Truth knows its chops well and how to execute it. With its catchy riff writing consisting of hooks and subtle dynamic changes - it doesn't come as overbearing or generic. (Not like every other tech-death band going overkill mode with technicality) The guitar tone is not too processed (like The Last of Lucy guitar tone) having a bit old-school and chunky vibe to it. The drums do much of the heavy lifting besides the guitar to provide the grooves and necessary tightness. Among the style of Tech-Death where bands choose either groove or technicality or dissonance - Godless Truth definitely went with the groove! With tight song-writing and wasting no album run-time, “Godless Truth” definitely stands out to me as one of the catchiest, grooviest and technically laden albums of 2022.

(A special credit to the label of Transcending Obscurity for providing such good bands and albums)
