Regicide - Kill the King (Review)

What happens when like minded musicians across the country come together for the purpose of music making ? Well, they create memorable gems. Such is the history of Kill the King - where musicians from Pune and Bengal came together for an ambitious band. Releasing their first single “In the Name of Culture” in the earlier months of 2021, the band made their mark on the Indian metal scene quickly. The band gave us their latest single “Regicide” for a listen, and all I can think of is some thrash madness now!

Beginning with chaos instilled toms fillers with dissonant chords, pinched harmonics and dive bombs, “Regicide” main riff wastes no time in showcasing thrash brutality with a lethal mixture of speed on fast notes of hammer-ons and  pull-offs. Pritam Goswami’s unique vocal texture on top aided by the tasty creative riffs is quite reminiscent of where modern thrash style has evolved into. With a bit of old-school death influences and often accompanied by shred styled riff playing, Aditya and Rishikesh prove why they are some of the best guitarists in the country right now. The chorus follows along with the vocal melodies, creating memorable sections of the song.

Along the three minute mark, the song resets its dynamics to more groovy riffs and interesting play of double bass by Akarsh Singh. The word enunciations seem a bit in the style of Nu-Metal in this section. Followed by these, are the guitar solos by Aditya and Rishikesh Dharap, which is reminiscent of the type of guitar solo from their first single. Dueting for almost two minutes with melodic phrasings to almost technical with sweeps and shreds - this huge solo section has everything guitar nerds might be looking for!

The specially designed outro follows after the solo - giving a hardcore and mosh-pit vibe right away. With vocal lines reminding of the band name itself and their musical motto, the song ends showcasing all the energy, power and rage.

Like “In the name of Culture”, Kill the King continues to provide social commentary - With lyrics talking about disillusion, misguidance and oppression by the so-called “authority”, “Regicide” takes up social cause to deliver a message through their lyrics. The production of the song is superior with a modern approach to the sounds in the mix. The guitar has a chainsaw vibe to it, which penetrates the mix, providing brutal riffs. The drums & bass lines are groovy with a metallic and polished tone to it, providing the necessary tightness to the song. With “Regicide”, the band holds their ground strong and proves they are going nowhere in the upcoming days! All I can wish for are more lethal compositions from them.
