Spreading Miasma - Spreading Miasma (Review)

Death Metal fans (and Metal fans in general) have polarizing opinions for Brutal Death metal - they either completely despise it, calling it “technical for the sake of technical” or love whatever Lord Marco does! As for me, I have enjoyed bands like Neurogenic, Gorgasm, Brain Drill and that's what motivated me to take up this EP.

What seemed as if Spreading Miasma were done after the release of their album “Illumination”, the band returns after a full decade with their face-melting and hyper-complex technical death metal songwriting, in the form of their newest self-titled EP “Spreading Miasma”.

The EP opener "General Blast" starts with absolutely crushing technical riffs with rapid blast beats and skank beats on drums. With much complex technical prowess along with sweep solos, this song kind of reminds me of “The Aftermath” by Origin. “Possessed” showcases yet technical riffs, but being melodious in a way with grooves on drums. The riffs being mostly sweeping arpeggios, tremolo picking and tapping, the band never fails to tell the listener how much ‘techy’ they can be. Few seconds into “Hybris Divine” and my first impression is that of Brain Drill and Neurogenic, though they are moments of jazz and prog stuff midway. The EP closure “Regret” has a bass solo worth mentioning. The track flows into a sludgy-doom vibe in the later half, while keeping the neo-classical guitar phrasing and blasting drums throughout the runtime of the song.

“Regret” is a very dense record - and this is not for everyone! Guitars with its dirty tone, the raw sounding kit of drums and gnarly tone on bass, accounts for the perfect listening experience. Also, the band never falters to showcase their peak-songwriting and technical prowess for a moment also. Though the EP serves as nothing original to the already dense and saturated genre of brutal death record, it’s good to see Spreading Miasma back again in the game after a decade again.
